Facts about Parent Access to the NHPS School Reform Plan
• Mayor DeStefano and the NHPS have vowed to make New Haven “the best-performing urban district in the nation by 2015.” Now is the time to hold leaders to their promises and TOC will continue to bring public attention to the condition of our schools and put pressure on decision-makers to produce results. At a recent forum our superintendent acknowledged our role saying, “I’ve got to learn to talk less and listen more. Teach Our Children has been beating up on me for the past year just trying to get me to realize that.”
• The school reform committee overseeing the mayor’s school reform campaign consists of three administrators, three teachers, and only two parents.
• The parents on the committee were appointed by the administration rather than elected by the parents.
• The parents of two other committees involving reform (the Survey and Teacher Evaluation Committees) were alsohand picked by the administration.
• The regular meetings of the three committees will not be open to the public.
• The parent meeting at which the committees were announced was an invitation-only event with only two parents from each school invited.

TOC is committed to expanding parental input during this important process.
